Hello, there! My name is Mariano Friginal — husband, father of four, and professional photographer/video content creator (you can see my work here). I was born in the Philippines, but grew up in the California. I’ve been making a living in the photography industry since 2006. I started by taking various photo gigs that would come along, but I found my specialty in documenting weddings and capturing artistic portraits.
My first camera was a Canon Rebel XT. Well, confession time: I actually got it as a Christmas present for my wife in 2005, but isn’t that how many of us got into photography in the first place — by a serendipitous happenstance? Reading an instruction manual is never my wife’s idea of fun, so I took it upon myself to learn how to use “her” camera. I eventually gave it back to her months later after I bought myself a Canon 5D. That next year, I photographed my first wedding as a favor for my wife’s friend. It was an “Aha!” moment for me, it was the start of my photography career as a Canon shooter, and has led me to where I am now.
In 2013, my wife got me the Sony RX1 a couple of days before we left the country for our 10 year anniversary. Little did I know this 9-day trip to Central America would mark the beginning of a big shift for me. I would eventually switch to a Sony mirrorless setup. This blog is a collection of my observations from this journey.
